Jacques Cartier’s Tree of Life Garden

During his exploration of the St. Lawrence River in eastern Canada in 1536, French explorer, Jacques Cartier, was confronted with a life-threatening dilemma. Twenty five of his crew members had been lost to a spreading “pestilence,” and more were dying! Donnaconna, chief of the Huron natives in the area of Cartier’s outpost, also contacted the deadly disease. Having recovered from the dreaded scurvy, Donnaconna told Cartier that he was cured from the disease by a tree called the anneda. The Huron Indian women showed the captain how to create a brew by boiling bark and fronds from this special tree in water. Soon after drinking this peculiar concoction, Cartier and his men were cured of the disease. This life-saving event created such appreciation in Cartier, that he took specimens of the tree back to France and named the tree, Arborvitae, which means “Tree of Life!” He ultimately created a garden in his beloved French Pyrenees Mountains where he planted his celebrated Arborvitae, the Tree of Life, along with other unique specimen plants he had gathered throughout the world. His love for the Pyrenees came from its majestic waterfalls, streams and lush moss! His collection included brilliant red, ornamental maples from a nation later to be known as Japan, and several varieties of woodland plants from the mountains of a land only known as one of the America’s! Welcome to this, his garden!

Allin Landscaping, Inc., a family owned and operated landscape company, opened for business in April of 2001. After being with Scapes for several years, George Allin began Allin Landscaping with his son, Josh, designing, installing and maintaining residential landscaping. Together they planted large trees, installed unique landscapes, built modular walls and laid sod. Ultimately, the other two Allin sons, Jonathan and Joel, and George’s wife, Beverly, were able to join the landscape team. George eventually was able to leave working on the crew devoting his time to the development of the company. He has said, “It was never part of my plan in life to own a company! I would never have dreamed of being able to work with my entire family! What a great gift!”

Allin Landscaping’s team, which has expanded over the years, thrives on the opportunity to be creative. Projects have included estate landscape development, woodland get-a-ways, mountain waterfalls, streams, ponds and tropical gardens. Allin Landscaping’s experience in every area of landscaping provides its customers with a well-rounded approach to their landscaping dreams and needs.
